Publisher: Brilliance AudioPublished: May 1, 2018Narrator: Kate OrsiniReceived: for honest review from Thomas Allen & SonEmotionally guarded Daphne Amos always believed she’d found a kindred spirit in her fiancé, Heath. Both very private people, they’ve kept their pasts hidden from the world, and each other, until Heath’s escalating nightmares begin to put an undeniable strain on their relationship. Determined to give their impending marriage the best chance of succeeding, Heath insists that Daphne join him on a seven-day retreat with Dr. Matthew Cerny, a psychologist celebrated for getting to the root of repressed memories. Daphne reluctantly agrees—even though the past is the last place she wants to go.
The retreat’s isolated and forbidding location increases her unease, as do the doctor’s rules: they must relinquish their keys and phones, they’ll be monitored at all hours by hidden cameras, and they’re never to socialize with the other guests.
One sleepless night, Daphne decides to leave her room…and only then does she realize that the institute is not at all what it seems—and that whatever’s crying out from Heath’s past isn’t meant to be heard. It’s meant to be silenced.
Super dark and suspenseful. If you love psychological thrillers, then you are in for a treat. This book is filled with secrets, a twist like you won't believe and will have you second guessing what you think is coming next.
The characters, Daphne and Heath, seem to be the couple that has everything, but what everyone is in the dark about is that they each have horrible pasts that they've agreed to never share. Just move forward with love and forget the past. Heath begins to have nightmares and wants Daphne to come with him to a retreat to deal with his issues. She is skeptical because she's afraid her secrets will come out and is not ready for that - if only she knew that was the least of her worries by agreeing to go.
This book gets dark quickly and you have a sense of unease as Daphne slinks around the ground of the retreat while her future husband is receiving his treatments. Everything she questions, including the doctor, adds to the creep factor of this old house in the middle of nowhere.
I went into this book blind - only knowing it was a psychological thriller, and I'm so glad I did. The twist totally caught me off guard and I love when that happens.
Grab this book if you are looking for an creepy and twisty read. I will definitely be checking out more books by Emily Carpenter in future.
If you've read Every Single Secret, let me know what you thought in the comments? Have you read any other good thrillers that I should check out?
