I absolutely loved this storyline! Everglades, gangsters, FBI and a determined to survive female lead. Great combo! This first book in the Finnegan Connection series is off to a great start.

Kody (Dakota) Cameron appears to be the demure daughter of a family who cares for and owns Crystal Island, the notorious home of a deceased gangster and possible location of hidden loot, but once these gangsters take over and start pushing her around she fights back in the only way she knows how: her words! She gives them ultimatums that I'd be terrified to even attempt to say in the face of guns. I love how she stepped up to the challenge in order to survive and help keep people safe.

Nick Connolly, the undercover FBI agent, is playing his role perfectly. He fits in with the others, yet has an air about him that says he's no murderer. He takes charge when needed to ensure the safety of others while still keeping the head boss in control. He's smooth in the way he relays info back to the FBI. But his striking blue eyes give Kody a hint that she's met him somewhere and he just might not be the bad guy he's portraying. She keeps her eye on him while trying to figure out just how she could know this masked man.

The mob guys in this story are actually kind of intimidating at first and then it seems like they start falling apart and it actually made me laugh how horrible they seemed to be at this job. They were not as organized as a team as you think they'd be, but that's because their head guy is hiding details from them so that they can't overthrow him. I think I liked the mix of trigger happy bad guys and gangsters who wouldn't hurt a fly - it felt realistic to me. I think that just because you steal doesn't mean you have to be a murderer too. 

Now the best part, it takes place in Florida near the Everglades and they end up right in the middle of all the hammocks and waterways among the alligators and snakes looking for this hidden loot. I loved this setting and that the entire story didn't take place in the mansion at Crystal Island. It added mystery and action that made the story. It was creepy to know that as they are looking for this treasure there was added danger. 

Also, it was perfect that the romance part between Kody and Nick wasn't the main plotline, but an added bonus. Especially as the tension builds between the two as she figures out how she knows him and that they've been attracted to each other before this terrifying meeting. Great balance!

 

Overall, a great first book in a new series by Heather Graham.
