My First Kiss by Nikki JeffordIn the Spirit of Saint Valentine’s, I’m going to share the story of my first kiss… at not-so-sweet 21.You read correctly. Wine touched these lips before a boy’s mouth did. Believe me, I wanted to. I was ready at 6.I wish I could say no opportunities presented themselves, but, in fact, there were two perfect moments with two guys I really liked that ended in:
Me slamming the door on one’s face and bloodying his lipAnd
Me punching a guy in the gut when he leaned in for the kissSo moving past my intimacy and trust issues, I finally met the man who would claim my lips for himself. Our waiter one afternoon, 27-year-old Todd, was Hollywood hot.Between settings, clearings, and veggie pizza we talked and joked. My mom embarrassed me by saying I wanted his number, but in the end he sent a waitress out to share his digits, which were hastily scrawled across my paper placemat. I called and we arranged a date. This guy was gorgeous. Never mind that he was six years older and lived in a trailer park. He looked like a Greek God dressed all in white ready to ride out across the savannah on a safari.I wish everyone’s first kiss could be like ours. On date three, we hiked up a deserted rode on the Anchorage hillside. The sky had turned this romantic shade of gray, like a backdrop before a monumental thunderstorm. We walked across the mountains, the city a distant shimmer of light below. Todd had my hand in his and then he swung me around, gathered me in his arms and kissed me deeply. A long unhurried kiss that lasted ages. He kissed me two more times before we headed down and he drove me home. I stayed up all night reliving each kiss. But here I must end on a total cliché. Todd started acting funny on the phone after this. He worried what my mom would think about him “taking advantage of her daughter.” (It was a kiss for freak’s sake!) I finally wrangled another date out of him only to be stood up. To this day I don’t know what happened. (And yes, I entertained the idea that he was unconscious in a hospital somewhere.)It’s not like I slammed a door on him or punched him. Though lucky for me, I left for France three months later and met the real love of my life, Sébastien – and let’s face it: 1) The name Sébastien so trumps Todd and 2) Find me a better smoocher than a Frenchman – I mean, they have a kiss named after them!So readers, how was your first kiss? ReplyDeleteAwkward. Nothing like the movies.
ReplyDeleteLOL! awful! I hated it! :)
ReplyDeleteI was thirteen and he ended up being my boyfriend for three whole weeks before we broke up. It was pretty nice- nothing toe-curling, but we were only thirteen.
ReplyDeleteGoodness. My first kiss was utterly humiliating. I kissed my cute next door neighbor who was a year older than me (I also now know he is gay)... I was silly and romantic and must have sensed something... because during pretend... I kissed his hand like I was the prince and he the princess... teehee
ReplyDeleteMy first kiss could have been my last it was that bad. All wet & mooshy.
ReplyDeleteit was at a haunted house - just before the people we were with scared us to death!
