My Trunk Novels

I have seen this question out there a lot and I think I may have answered it incorrectly before. I thought I didn’t have any trunk novels until I found out the true definition and found a few old notebooks of mine that brought back a few memories. So I do in fact have three trunk novels, and possibly more that I still don’t remember.

The first was a novel I tried to write when I was somewhere between 10 and 14. I can tell because my writing still looks like ‘chicken scratching’ as my family likes to call it. I was still in a SERIOUS Tamora Pierce phase and adored all books about lady knights and mages, so naturally, I tried to write one. It started out as a script and then when I realized I couldn’t write the same details in a script, it ended up being a novel (My friend read a line and said, “How are they going to put a sparkle in her eyes? It isn’t like they are going to sprinkle glitter on her.”). It came to 144 pages and was titled ‘Rose Warrior’. Because my lady knight was so beautiful and graceful, like a rose, but you try and touch her and you will get hurt.

The second was called Iridescent and was about a magical world with many different species living together and some of them at war because of a cruel king who wanted to wipe out the Iridescent. This one was written when I was about 15 and I only showed it to three people before hiding it forever. In the story, one of the soldiers sent to kill an iridescent, upon looking into her eyes, was unable to and ended up being whisked away into the forest where he found out about the truth behind the king’s hatred.

The third that I found was written when I was about 17, just before I started working on The ThirteenthChime and was called Phoenix. It is about a race of humans who would burst into flames when touched and be reborn, so they were unable to come into human contact until they were willing to live again. This particular phoenix was unable to control her abilities and it led to chaos and people coming after her.

While I never submitted any of these novels because I didn’t truly consider them novels, just fun practice stories, I had a lot of fun reading them a while back when I found them. As with all writers, you grow over time and look back and wince thinking… oh goodness, I wrote THAT?!? But it was fascinating to get back into my younger mind and remember that while I hid it from the world, I had already started writing on a smaller scale in my free time, in the back of my school notebooks or in the notebooks I had hidden under my bed.

So yes, in a way I had three trunk novels, in another way I just had a few writing exercises. Let’s not even go into the story about an alien when I was 11 that lasted a whole two pages. :-p
