Okay this is a little late to the party, but I couldn't pass up the chance to talk about BANNED BOOKS.
The next event to take place in Canada is the Freedom to Read Week is February 24 - March 2, 2013. It is a annual event to encourage Canadians to make informed decisions about what they read based on having the intellectual freedom under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Freedom to Read Week is organized by Freedom of Expression Committee.
This all leads to censorship. You can see the history of censorship here, including bannings and book burnings. Even though Canada is viewed as a free country, that doesn't stop books and magazines from being removed from our libraries. We often do not hear a lot about books being banned via the news resources out there, but it happens much more often than we know. To find an up to date list of the currently challenged books, click here.
Challenged books still stay on library shelves if the challenge is dismissed, but I am surprised to see the following on the list regardless:
-J.K Rowling's Harry Potter series (though this is probably still from when the books first came out - you know all that crazy witchcraft and wizardry - read some kids objections to censoring this series here)
-Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Mysteries Series - (an article on why it's on the list)
-To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee (I know this one has been challenged a million times in it's over 50 years in history of being published - yet it is still a big seller around the world and an amazing story - check out this site for a complete history of this amazing book)
