Love May Fail by Matthew QuickPublisher: HarperPublished: June 16, 2015Pages: 416Received: for honest review via publisher and TLC Book ToursFind Online: Goodreads | Amazon | IndieBound | B&NPortia Kane is having a meltdown. After escaping her ritzy Florida life and her cheating pornographer husband, she finds herself back in South Jersey, a place that remains largely unchanged from the years of her unhappy youth. Lost and alone, looking for the goodness she believes still exists in the world, Portia sets off on a quest to save the one man who always believed in her—and in all of his students: her beloved high school English teacher, Mr. Vernon, who has retired broken and alone after a traumatic classroom incident.
Will a sassy nun, an ex-heroin addict, a metalhead little boy, and her hoarder mother help or hurt Portia’s chances on this quest to resurrect a good man and find renewed hope in the human race? Love May Fail is a story of the great highs and lows of existence: the heartache and daring choices it takes to become the person you know (deep down) you are meant to be.
Apparently having meltdowns and/or secluding yourself from the world is the way to be. Between Portia pretty much have a nervous breakdown over her asshat husband cheating on her and Mr.Vernon her favourite English who is a recluse of the shyest kind, they make quite the pair on a quest that just might change everyone's lives.
Matthew Quick always writes so much hope into the lives of his broken characters. Each and every character in this book has flaws, some bigger than others, but they are there and he explores them in such amazing and intricate ways.
This book is like the best of rooting for the underdog - you want each and every one of the characters to change and become better people or at least succeed in some way. You want Portia to succeed in helping Mr. Vernon back to the life he once lived and to be the man she looked up to in high school. You want so much for her new romantic relationship to work out. And even more, you want that little metalhead boy to have the life he deserves.
Such an emotional journey especially since love may fail, but you won't know until you give it a shot. I loved that Mr. Vernon taught his classes and made them feel that they could do anything. I hope you'll enjoy his first day once you read it in the book.... where they make paper airplanes just to see if what they think will happen really happens. It shows great strength and understanding to accept how feel about yourself and vow to make a difference.
“Portia Kane, Official Member of the Human Race! This card entitles you to ugliness and beauty, heartache and joy—the great highs and lows of existence—and everything in between. It also guarantees you the right to strive, to reach, to dream, and to become the person you know (deep down) you are meant to be. So make daring choices, work hard, enjoy the ride, and remember—you become exactly whomever you choose to be.”

I love stories where I can root for the underdog, particularly when those stories turn out well for the underdog in the end.
ReplyDeleteThanks for being a part of the tour!
I feel like all of Quick's books have an underdog to root for. Can't wait to read Forgive Me Leonard Peacock that's sitting on my shelf. :)
