As the last Healer in the Fifteen Realms, Avry of Kazan is in a unique position: in the minds of her friends and foes alike, she no longer exists. Despite her need to prevent the megalomanical King Tohon from winning control of the Realms, Avry is also determined to find her sister and repair their estrangement. And she must do it alone, as Kerrick, her partner and sole confident, returns to Alga to summon his country into battle.
Though she should be in hiding, Avry will do whatever she can to support Tohon’s opponents. Including infiltrating a holy army, evading magic sniffers, teaching forest skills to soldiers and figuring out how to stop Tohon’s most horrible creations yet; an army of the walking dead—human and animal alike and nearly impossible to defeat.
War is coming and Avry is alone. Unless she figures out how to do the impossible ... again.
As weird as this may sound, I was so happy to be pulled back into the magic of the Fifteen Realms again. I needed to be back with Avry, Kerrick and their crew. I fell in love with their story and adventures while reading Touch of Power and I needed to know what happens to them all.
There are so many challenges that the group faces in this story. From white lies between friends and trying to protect those they hold close, to fighting the walking dead and trying to save the world they know. Every page held something new - adventure, high emotions, romance, and surprises you can't even imagine.
I enjoyed the dual point of views in this book - Avry and Kerrick. It worked well as they had to split up to serve the greater good and were able to show what they each were doing.
With Avry trying to hide from everyone in plain sight, it gets quite tense. You worry along with her and cheer her on as she makes headway with her missions. She ends up showing us she is much more than just a Healer. She is attempting the impossible and figures out quite a lot about herself during this journey.
There are some great twists in this book and just when I thought I had it figured out, BAM, something happens to change everything. Though there is a cliff hanger at the end of this book, which happens to not be so bad for me as I have the next book just waiting to be devoured.
Check out my review for Taste of Darkness tomorrow.
About the author:
Maria lives with her family and a black cat
name Valek (a.k.a. the bug assassin!) in Pennsylvania where she is at
work on another book and/or a short story (yes this is purposely vague -
as you can see, Maria is very busy and updating her website takes time
that she just doesn't have. Oh, all right, but if this information is
out of date, don't blame Maria :)
Check out my interview with Maria .
