Kacey Cleary’s whole life imploded four years ago in a drunk-driving accident. Now she’s working hard to bury the pieces left behind—all but one. Her little sister, Livie. Kacey can swallow the constant disapproval from her born-again aunt Darla over her self-destructive lifestyle; she can stop herself from going kick-boxer crazy on Uncle Raymond when he loses the girls’ college funds at a blackjack table. She just needs to keep it together until Livie is no longer a minor, and then they can get the hell out of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

But when Uncle Raymond slides into bed next to Livie one night, Kacey decides it’s time to run. Armed with two bus tickets and dreams of living near the coast, Kacey and Livie start their new lives in a Miami apartment complex, complete with a grumpy landlord, a pervert upstairs, and a neighbor with a stage name perfectly matched to her chosen “profession.” But Kacey’s not worried. She can handle all of them. What she can’t handle is Trent Emerson in apartment 1D.

Kacey doesn’t want to feel. She doesn’t. It’s safer that way. For everyone. But sexy Trent finds a way into her numb heart, reigniting her ability to love again. She starts to believe that maybe she can leave the past where it belongs and start over. Maybe she’s not beyond repair.

But Kacey isn’t the only one who’s broken. Seemingly perfect Trent has an unforgiveable past of his own; one that, when discovered, will shatter Kacey’s newly constructed life and send her back into suffocating darkness.

1. Was there a specific comment, thought or dream that gave you the idea for Ten Tiny Breaths?

I have a terrible fear of drunk driving and so it made sense to take that fear and turn it into a story. I'm honestly not sure how the title came to me though. It literally just popped into my head one day and then I spun the plot around it.

2. What was your inspiration for creating Kacey's character? For Livie's? For Trent's?

Writing hard, angry characters is something that comes easily to me and I knew that Kacey had to be hard, after what she had dealt with. The entire story is about her breaking through the darkness and so I wanted to surround her with a cast characters who could help her up, her sister being the first. And Trent, well... he had to be a good, sweet guy because that was what she needed but she'd be bored with an "all good" guy, right? Hence his edgier moments. I don't typically create characters based on real people so I wouldn't say any person in my life inspired Kacey, Livie, or Trent. But I did know two Irish sisters in high school - one with bright red hair and the other with black hair.

3. How would you sum up Ten Tiny Breaths in a tweet?

A mistake that can’t be unmade and the consequences that destroy lives. Nothing but ten tiny breaths trying to keep them together.

4. If TTB were to be made into a movie, who would you cast for the roles of Kacey, Trent, and Livie?

Kacey would be Emma Stone. Trent would be Liam Hemsworth, and Livie would be Brittany Snow.

5. I see that One Tiny Lie is being released on Jan 14/14, did you enjoy writing about Kacey's story or Livie's story more?

I honestly can't say. I can say that Kacey's story was somehow easier. Livie was a tough character to nail because she's such a strong, "perfect" girl who makes a lot of mistakes while finding herself. It was hard to keep her character intact while putting her through all of that and,at the same time, I had to show her personal growth. I really enjoyed writing Ashton though :D

6. If you were stuck on a deserted island and could have only 5 things with you, what would you pick? (You can answer as yourself or one of the characters from TTB if you like).

A composting toilet, an army tent, soap, toothbrush, Henry Cavill (as you can see, I'm not cut out for being stranded on an island. And, yes, I realize Henry Cavill is not a "thing")

Born in small-town Ontario, Kathleen published her first book at the age of six with the help of her elementary school librarian and a box of crayons.

She is a voracious reader and the farthest thing from a genre-snob, loving everything from High Fantasy to Chick Lit.
