A diabolical pied piper comes to town in the the seventh installment of this hot paranormal mystery series.   High school freshman Jessica Walsh is a virago, a woman warrior who must protect her hometown from danger. And in the unusual little town of Nightshade, California, trouble is always lurking. At Nightshade’s Battle of the Bands, Jess’s boyfriend Dominic and his band Side Effects May Vary are up against Hamlin, a band so popular that their fans follow them everywhere. Soon, Nightshade’s musicians are doing risky, illegal and even fatal things—and claiming that strange music they heard right before falling asleep told them to do it. Could a diabolical pied piper be sabotaging the Battle of the Bands? It’s up to Jessica and her friends track down the tuneful tyrant.
Yet again, Marlene Perez' latest installment in the Dead Is Series was a quick and fun read. I still need to go back and read the original Dead Is Series, but from what I have read in this spin off series, I am loving it. I plan to share this series with my pre-teen niece - I know she is just going to love it.

Jessica is still out there fighting paranormal baddies in this next installment and also pining away for the ever elusive and mysterious Dominic. She has a sixth sense about things and can generally sniff out the abnormal happenings around town. Jessica is like a detective and a warrior all in one.

This was a very unique story because it invovled the band again and a crossover with a Pied Piper type evil. There are a few twists in the story, but I was able to figure out who was really behind all of the sabotaging of the Battle of the Bands. This is not unusual for a Dead Is book, but they are charming nonetheless and still have enough mystery to them that you can't wait to read more.

Also, the little love story between Jessica and Dominic is expanded on a little more. You can empathize with Jessica because Dominic is always giving her mixed signals.

Overall, another great addition to the series.

About the Author:
I grew up in Story City, Iowa, which I think has to mean something. I am the youngest of twelve children, which means that I’m very familiar with the survival-of-the-fittest theory.
I now live in Southern California with my family, a psychotic cat, an elderly Chihuahua, and an albino corn snake. The corn snake and I have agreed to keep our distance.

  1. Aww, it sounds cute. I haven't heard very much about this series, but it looks too freaking adorable. And I do like the titles. And I just LOVE the name Dominic. I'll try to read it. (:
