Weekly Feature here at Snowdrop Dreams of Books where authors and bloggers share what five books and what five other items they would want with them if they were ever stuck on a deserted island and why they chose them. Some posts are serious, some are extremely silly and some are mixture. Check back every week to see what your favourite authors and bloggers would pick. Click here if you would like to participate.
This week Canadian author, Chloe Jacobs, is stuck on my Deserted Island... check out what she has chosen to bring along with her.
Five Things:
1) I would need a shovel. It’s not very original. Everybody probably says shovel, but that’s because it’s plenty useful in more than one way. You can use a shovel to dig a trench around your sleeping hut/tent when it rains, which will help direct the water away and hopefully means you don’t wake up floating down the beach. You can use a shovel to dig a latrine (as icky as that sounds, let’s face it, you’re going to need one—or else that would just be gross). You can use a shovel to play whack-a-mole with the rodents…or zombies. You never know when or where there will be zombies. (I know, I know, this island isn’t very fun so far, is it?)
2) I would want to have a tightly zipped sleeping bag and air mattress – and yes, I’m going to consider these as one item. Both are equally as important. The mattress keeps you off the ground where the bugs are, and the bag keeps those bugs from crawling where they’re not welcome.
3) Toilet paper. I don’t have to explain this one, right? Nobody wants to use the island greenery, only to realize you’ve picked a leaf from the poison oak plant right beside you. O.O
4) That hidden compartment filled with rum barrels like from Pirates ofthe Caribbean. Necessities, man.
5) My husband. That man is the most capable and resourceful person I know. He’ll build a treehouse mansion to rival anything those Robinsons could come up with, in no time flat!
That was pretty pathetic, I know. I’m not exactly Survivor material…although I do navigate the suburban jungle pretty darn well. Give me a hatchback, a cell phone, and a kids’ soccer team and watch me get them all to the field on time, with ice cream for afterward!
Five Books:
1) Outlander, Diana Gabaldon – Can I just bring the whole series and consider it one book?
2) IT, Stephen King – My idea of the classics. There’s nothing like something to scare you silly when you’re sitting in the dark, completely alone, with no one to save you…
3) Shadow of the Moon, MM Kaye – A beautiful book I find myself reading over again every few years because it has everything: superb writing, great characters, beautiful setting.
4) War and Peace, Leo Tolstoy –1300 pages of epic. That should keep me occupied for a while.
5) How to Survive on a Deserted Island, Tim O’Shei – Yup, that would probably be a good one to take, don’t you think?
About the Author:
Chloe Jacobs is a native of nowhere and everywhere, having jumped around to practically every Province of Canada before finally settling in Ontario where she has now been living for a respectable number of years. Her husband and son are the two best people in the entire world, but they also make her wish she'd at least gotten a female cat. No such luck. And although the day job keeps her busy, she carves out as much time as possible to write. Bringing new characters to life and finding out what makes them tick and how badly she can make them suffer is one of her greatest pleasures, almost better than chocolate and fuzzy pink bunny slippers.
Her debut Young Adult fantasy, GRETA AND THE GOBLIN KING, will be available everywhere in November 2012! In the meantime, check her out online…
Thanks for having me as a guest! It was great fun trying to figure out what books/things to bring on the island! :)
