What kind of reader are you?

Are you a "mood reader" or a "read in order of receiving" kinda person?

I was thinking about this topic for a while and I have to say that I think I am more of a mood reader, or at least I prefer to read my books that way. I do try to get to my review books in a timely fashion, especially the ones for blog tours, etc. But most of the time the reason a book in my review pile doesn't get read right away is that I am not in the right mood for it. I would hate to give a book a bad review based on the fact that I wasn't in the mood for it, so sometimes my review books wait a little until I am ready for them - or I pick them up, give them a try, put them down and try again later if it's just not working for me.

This week is a perfect example. I'm off work recovering from surgery and I thought what a perfect time to get through those two blog tour books I need to read for this week and next week. But what did I do? Picked up a copy of Monster High that I borrowed from my niece instead. I wasn't in the mood for the review books at all. Now I'm at the point where I can get back into my two review books and hopefully just fly through the pages. It's almost like going through a reading slump and then finding that one book that you've just been dying to read and it brings you back into the reading/reviewing world again.

My BFF, Aislynn, says:
"I'm definitely a mood reader - the book has to really get my attention for me to pick it up and devour it.  I have several books sitting in my 'to be read' pile that I know I have to read, but they are a lot 'heavier' then I normally read, and I just haven't been in the mood for that type of book. I agree that sometimes waiting will alter how I see a book - if I'm "forced" to read it I might not truly enjoy the book the way I should."

My fiancee, Greg, says:
"I like reading books that I know I'm going to enjoy at that moment. I read what I want to read. Even if I received a bunch of books as gifts, I don't read them in the order that I received them, I read them based on my mood or based on if it's part of a series I know I already enjoy."

Do your book moods change like those of a mood ring?

  1. I am definitely a moody reader! I have a friend who plans what she's going to read ahead of time and then she sticks to that schedule. No way could I do that! If I tried, it would probably take me forever to finish the book and I wouldn't be able to truly enjoy it.

    1. The only books I plan to read are book tour ones, but I like to mix in books from my TBR pile to keep is fun. I'm very much a mood reader and will flip to a different book if I feel like I'm struggling with a review book. I would not be able to stick to a schedule like that. LOL

      Thanks for stopping by Isalys!

  2. I am absolutely a mood reader, and as such sometimes have up to three books on the go - say, a doorstopper literary classic, a fantasy and a childhood favourite, depending on what I fancy at the time.

  3. I totally feel ya. I have a TBR mountain and a lot of those books are ones that I eagerly awaited their releases. But did I jump into them right when I got them? Nope. And I've picked one or two up to start reading and ended up putting them back. Mainly cuz I was not feeling either that genre or I knew that the mood wasn't right for what I wanted right now. :)

    1. Erin - I totally agree... my mountain keeps growing too. Good luck tackling your TBR pile. And thank you for taking an interest in my post. :)

  4. I'm a mood reader for sure and I am doing better at not accepting reviews also. I could never read in order of received that will total mess with my flow and probably put me in a slump.

At times I can't figure out what I want to read and will read first paragraphs to get a feel and one will always suck me in.

    1. That's an awesome way of choosing what to read next. I am also getting better at saying NO to books for review. I only accept ones that are on my wishlist or that I am really interested in. I have a huge review pile to catch up on... its kinda scary. LOL Hopefully this summer I can get it all cleaned up and be on track again. ;)

  5. I read in order of which I receive my books, with the exception of books for review.

  6. Definitely mood reader. It's hard to make yourself read something when you don't feel like enjoying it.

  7. Great post! I am definitely a mood reader. I have a general order, especially if I promised a review, but if I'm not in the mood I'll read something else first.

    1. That's pretty much how I am too. I have my review list, but sometimes I have to read something that I am more in the mood for before I fall into a reading slump. :)

  8. I'm definitely a mood reader, too! No matter how good or appealing the book is, if I don't feel like reading it, I'm not going to read it until I am in the right mood. I have some books I would read in a heartbeat at the time I ordered them, but then the mood passed before I got them, so now they are waiting for when I'm in the right mood.
