Deserted Island with Rachel from Fiktshun!!!

Thank you so much for the invitation to your awesome feature. I love the idea and am so excited to be able to share my five deserted island books and items. And I promise not to cheat by counting a series as one book. (Most of the books have various covers. I included the ones that were my favorites.)

What 5 books would you want with you if stuck on a deserted island and why?

WIZARD AND GLASS (The Dark Tower IV) by Stephen King

Stephen King is and always will be my favorite author of all time and this fourth book in his amazing series will always be my favorite. It’s epic with a touch of high fantasy. It’s the story that visits the main character, Roland Deschain’s past in Gilead and it’s the only book in the series I could read over and over again as a standalone if I weren’t able to save all the other books.

IF I STAY (If I Stay #1) by Gayle Forman

Because this book is gorgeous and heartbreaking. And if I were stuck on a deserted island I would need a constant reminder that things could be worse.

ENDLESS KNIGHT (The ArcanaChronicles #2) by Kresley Cole

If I were stuck on a deserted island I couldn’t imagine being happier than spending it with Evie, Jack and Death. This one’s got more than a little sizzle too, so I’d never be bored.

THE LONG WALK by Stephen King

I re-read this book every year and I could not survive a lifetime on a deserted island without it. It’s haunting and grim and while it seems simple on its face it’s got so many layers that just keep surprising me year after year.

WATERSHIP DOWN by Richard Adams

I read this story as a child many, many times. And I read it as an adult. It’s a beautiful and heartbreaking story and one that is near and dear to me. If I was stuck on a deserted island it would also remind me not to give up, not to lose hope and to be courageous.

(Of course if I was allowed to land on the island with my Kindle which happened to be solar powered you can bet I’d want to have ALL my 1700+ books.)

What 5 things/items would you want with you if stuck on a deserted island and why?

I am going to assume that the island is one that has at least a few palm trees, like the one depicted in your graphic, that it is sandy and warm and that there is some sort of food source or any of the items I picked would be fairly irrelevant.

• A plastic container with a lid that would allow me to catch water when it rains and store it so that it won’t all evaporate during the day.
• A blanket or sleeping bag. Whether sun or rain I want to have something other than my clothes to cover myself with. Especially during mosquito season. Also helpful to have when washing my clothes.
• A toothbrush. While I’m sure I could fashion something out of a tree, the idea of living with sweaters on my teeth makes me ill. It’s why I’m not quite so fond of fictional pirate stories. Their teeth. *shudders.*
• A 1,000 count box of wooden kitchen matches. Because I’ll never be able to rub two sticks together and produce fire. Though as a vegetarian, on a warm island, without the ability to make s’mores I’m not entirely sure what I’d need fire for.
• Pen and paper because if I were stuck on a deserted island what better way to spend it than trying to write a few novels that I never seem to have time to write in real life.

(Of course if the deserted island was one in which there was an abandoned hotel with running water and electricity I’d swap the pen and paper for a laptop and the blanket for my Kindle and the plastic container for my iPhone. I’d still want the matches because no matter how big a kitchen you can never seem to find a box of matches when you need it.)
