Buttoned-up book lover DJ is all sensible shoes, drab skirts and studious glasses. After an ill-advised spring-break-fueled fling left her mortified, she's committed to her prim and proper look. When she's hired by a rural library in middle-of-nowhere Kansas, she finally has the lifestyle to match-and she can't wait to get her admin on.
But it's clear from day one that the small-town library is more interested in circulating rumors than books. DJ has to organize her unloved library, win over oddball employees and avoid her flamboyant landlady's attempts to set her up with the town pharmacist. Especially that last part-because it turns out handsome Scott Sanderson is her old vacation fling! She is not sure whether to be relieved or offended when he doesn't seem to recognize her. But with every meeting, DJ finds herself secretly wondering what it would be like to take off her glasses, unpin her bun and reveal the inner vixen she's been hiding from everyone-including herself.
I was completely drawn in by this cover and the fun title that goes with it. I think I was drawn in to this romance novel, because I have started dreaming about being a librarian and thinking that I missed my calling somehow. Wouldn't it be wonderful to work among books and fall in love?
DJ finally gets the big break she has been waiting for - her own library! In a quaint little town where she can blend in with her dowdy clothes and comfy shoes. She wants to have a new life, in a new place and a new persona - sadly she does this by using the stereotypical librarian look. After letting loose on her 21st birthday and having a one-night stand, she pretty much changed herself from Dorothy to DJ.
Interestingly enough, the woman who hires DJ has an ulterior motive - to set DJ up with her son. It's quite clever and sweet. I adored how Scott's mother keeps trying to get them to hang out and she used quite an interesting arsenal of techniques. Don't all mothers mean well? She is also a comedic addition to the book.
Scott is charming and handsome, but everything about him irritates DJ due to the fact that she knows who he is. She keeps trying to avoid him, so that he won't figure out just how he thinks he's met her before. She keeps hoping he won't put the pieces together.
The entire town is filled with such wonderful characters - the girl who befriends DJ, the quirky library co-workers (JAMES!) and the community that drops everything for the harvest. It's the kind of town that I'd love to live in one day.
Overall, I enjoyed this look at a rural farm life, a dash of romance among the stacks and the comedic relief of a well meaning mother!
