Duplicate Copies

So this week I've decided to ask my fellow bloggers if they have duplicate copies of books in their home libraries and why? So feel free to comment below and leave your input.

For example:
I have a complete set of The Spiderwick Chronicles by Holly Black - the originally published hardcovers that sit so nicely together on the shelf, BUT I also purchased a copy of The Spiderwick Chronicles: The Completely Fantastical Edition. I figure one day I will pass along the set of five to my kids and keep the complete edition for myself. But until then, they can sit nicely on my shelf side by side. I think part of the reason I have a hard time parting with the little set is because I picked up the first two in the series in 2004 during a trip to Australia (I read them on the plane and fell in love with the series).

I used to think it was weird when people had multiple copies of a book on their shelves, but since becoming a book blogger it all makes sense to me now. Sometimes I've seen bloggers with ARCs on their shelves and finished copies right beside them. I now understand why... as I have some ARCs on my shelves that are signed by the authors (since the only copies of their books that I had were ARCs when I attended signings). So it makes sense to keep it, especially if it's personalized as some of mine are. And it makes sense to want a finished copy that contains no spelling mistakes or has the final printed version with revisions.

What do you think of this phenomenon of keeping multiple copies? Do you keep your ARCs and buy finished copies too? Or do you just keep one or the other?

  1. I don't usually keep multiple copies of book - due to limited space! There are definitely a few ARC's I'd love to have finished copies of, but if I had finished copies I don't think I would keep the ARC (unless it was signed) I'd probably give it away to someone else.

    1. Ya I probably would host a giveaway for the ARC if I picked up a finished copy of a book (unless it was signed). :) I have limited space too, but still can't part with those two versions of Spiderwick Chronicles. LOL

  2. I don't usually keep duplicate copies either. It's rare that I end up with more than one copy of a book. The last time it happened to me was when I'd requested a review copy from a publisher and never received a response so I ordered it. A week later I received my review copy in the mail. Argh! LOL

  4. I only have one duplicate copy and that's because the author sent me one copy to review and one to giveaway. I just haven't had a chance to give it away yet. Due to limited shelf space, I try to giveaway all books unless I am highly attached to it, which is extremely rare.

  5. I don't make it a practice to keep multiple copies. As others have said, I have limited shelf space as it is. I did however, recently buy a book in a series and realise it was the book I already had (all the titles and covers were so similar!). I will be donating that one, I think. I also have two copies of one book because I bought one and then the author sent me the UK edition which surprise to me, a line of my review was printed right on the cover. Then I realised they had printed the same quote in the other edition I had too. I have to keep those ones right?!? Great question and thanks for the discussion :D

    1. Of course you have to keep them both. :) You are quoted on the cover and inside! That is pretty fantastic! :)

Thanks for stopping by my discussion post.

  6. I have about a dozen duplicates due to winning boxes of books where they included a few titles I already have, but most of those are being used for giveaways. Other than that, I do keep certain ARCs even if I have the finished copy. For example, I received an ARC of Pretty Crooked, loved it and got a signed copy about a month later but I refuse to pass my ARC along because it's the first ARC I've ever received from a publisher for review. I also tend to keep the ARC and finished copies if they have different covers. I don't even know why. :P

    1. LOL We all have our little "things" don't we?

I had held onto ARCs I didn't even enjoy at first because they were my first ARCs. You know... memories. LOL But I passed them along shortly after because I couldn't keep them all.

Love that you use doubles for giveaways! :)

  7. I have three copies of The Tommyknockers by Stephen King because he's my favourite author, that's one of my favourites of his, and I found the books pretty cheap :) I also have two copies of The Wizard of OZ because I had one since childhood and then got the second with some other books after my nana and papa had past and we had to clear out their house...I also have two copies of Cujo and Christine by SK (cheap buys again) and Needful Things because I already had one copy and then my mom got me another from a book swap at work without realizing I already had it :P

    1. Wow The Wizard of Oz is a great one to have a few copies of especially if a few are collectibles. :) And well SK is a great author too! :)

      Thanks for stopping by!
