Today author Jennifer Malone Wright is stopping by with a great guest post about how romance novels influenced her and affected her as a writer from the time that she was a teen and how they still are a favourite genre to date. I love working with Jennifer on any project either of us have going on and I hope that you will check out the bonus at the end of this guest post for a chance to win a few of Jennifer's books.
Romance and the Writer
I’ve really been struggling with what to write for romance week. Probably giving Chrystal a heart attack waiting for my post too. I just couldn’t decide on a specific topic and have started a post several times, only to delete it.
I decided to tell you about how romance novels have affected me as a writer.
I have always loved to read. But, the first real books I remember reading were the old Harlequin books my mom had in boxes. We had this extra place on the property, we called it “the apartment” and we kept all our stuff in there that wouldn’t fit in the house. So I’d go in there and lie around all day reading those books.
I loved them.
I don’t think romance novels give women or girls unrealistic expectations, I think it turns us into romantics at heart…and there is nothing wrong with that. This first experience with romance novels made me want to make up my own stories about it.
After the Harlequins I moved on to other kinds of books, I dearly loved V.C. Andrews for a long time, but every single story I sat down to write when I was young, revolved around a love story. Then, it dawned on me that almost every single book or movie you come across has some kind of romance to keep the story moving. Even if it’s not the main plot line, the love story is there.
So, then I moved on to harder stuff… no, not that kind. I mean like, Stephen King and Anne Rice kind of books. I love them to this day; however, those Harlequin novels instilled in me this romantic side that wants a love story to win out over everything. Today, I write in the paranormal genre, not romance. It’s odd, for such a lover of love, to not write romance, but I incorporate it into my stories just the same.
My favorite romance novels these days are Nora Roberts. I’ve read pretty much everything she has written and I freakin love them. She even twists a little bit of paranormal/supernatural into some of her books and I think those are the ones I love the most.
As a writer, I think romance and reading about romance is very important because in my opinion, there has to be a love story…there just has to.
