She will find her once quaint and beautiful hometown is now overrun with zombies and the only source of order is the local motorcycle gang. Can Evie and her family survive the rotters as well as the dangerous bikers?
SURVIVING THE END IS ONLY THE BEGINNING…
I'd like to welcome T Michelle Nelson back to my blog to promote her latest release, The Last Ones. It releases today and I cannot wait to read it. I love a good zombie story. Since the main character, Evie, is from a small town, Ms. Nelson has written a guest post to explain the setting for The Last Ones.
The
Setting for The Last
Ones
My first
series, the Lily Drake books, made mention of Benton, Kentucky. The
Last Ones is primarily set there. Most people reading this have
probably never heard of Benton, Kentucky. Some may even wonder if it
is fictional. It is not. It’s very real and also my hometown.
Benton,
like any other place has its quirky, unusual bits. Once a year we
have a celebration called Tater Day, which falls on the first Monday
in April. Having lived there all my life I never thought about it,
but once I moved and told people of our annual event, the reaction I
got was usually the same. They laughed and made some joke about being
a “hillbilly.”
In the last
few years I have had quite a few realizations about being from this
little town of less than 5,000 in rural Kentucky:
#1 – I
sound different. My accent is very regional. I never realized how
different I sounded, but I very much like it. No longer living in
Western Kentucky, it often gets me out of trouble. i.e. – speeding
tickets. It’s also an instant ice-breaker.
#2 –
People are friendlier in Benton than anywhere else I have travelled.
I suppose it might make some people uncomfortable, but we actually
look strangers in the eye and say hello. It’s how we roll.
#3 – It’s
beautiful. We have beautiful parks and lakes. Western Kentucky is
absolutely gorgeous and if you like boating, skiing, etc, it’s
heaven.
#4 – When
I speak with the twang I mentioned in #1, some people expect I am not
educated, or even stupid. I looked online for data regarding this
one, but couldn’t find it specific only to my hometown. I can tell
you I believe the majority of my graduating class went on to college
or some other type of higher learning. We have excellent schools in
the area. As a whole, I’d wager money on my Benton people holding
their own in any battle of wits.
#5 –
There is no food better than back home, especially, BBQ, according to
my husband (who is from North of the Mason-Dixon). I’m a
vegetarian, so I’m taking his word on this one. I can attest to the
pies and baked goods. It’s called meringue, and a chocolate pie is
an abomination without it.
West
Kentucky may not have been on your bucket list of places to visit,
but if you add it, you won’t be sorry. Visit Kentucky Lake and read
The Last Ones!
