Maxine “Max” Compton is in detention when the outbreak starts; so are several other students when Max’s best friend Brie storms in – chomping on the thigh bone of their favorite Home Ec teacher, Ms. Watkins!

Brie is a zombie, and quickly starts biting everyone in the room—even her best friend, Max!

When the class realizes what happens, it’s too late; they are all zombies—and they’re no longer alone.

Now a thin gray man in a white lab coat is testing them; making them read, and once they can no longer read, the zombies are led from the room, never to be seen again.

One by one the zombies stop reading, all but a few of them, Max included. Oh, and that cute thug she’s been crushing on for years, Cory Winthrop!

That’s when Max learns that there are good zombies, and bad zombies. And if she’s to survive, she has to pick a side.

Who knew Detention could be this hard… or last forever?

Why I've waited so long to read a Rusty Fischer book? I have no idea. It's not like I don't own two of them on my shelves (Vamplayers and Zombies Don't Cry), nor heard the most amazing things about his writing, but for some reason this is the first story I've read by this amazingly witty author.

This was such fun read - fast paced, not your typical zombie story - Mr. Fischer doesn't follow the rules and creates zombies that actually retain brain function and can still make decisions, still crack jokes and think for themselves. They are even required to READ to prove their brain function is still there - there are multiple types of zombies in this book and the best kind to be is one that can read.

The writing style is pretty much written they way a teenager would think or speak and I found that it worked well for the setting of the book and the characters involved.

“It’s a kind of half-smile, half-groan, half I-wish-I-could-say-something-really-smart-but-my-brain’s-stuck-in-neautral-righ-now-but-if-you-give-me-a-few-days-I’ll-have-a-snappy-comeback-ready-for-you type of thing.”

There's a little gore, a little action, a lot of humour and tiny smidgen of romance. It's a great combination. I look forward to reading more about this misfit group of undead - I'd like to see how some of the characters develop a little more.

I thought that he

Would be a dud;

But I was wrong

He is a stud.

Don’t get me wrong

He’s quite distasteful;

If you were to get

One big eyeful.

But do not let his

Bad looks fool you;

You think he’s gross?

Well, let me school you:

My zombie dear

Is so romantic;

When he speaks up

I get all frantic.

He only knows

One single word;

But when he says it

It’s absurd…

How flushed that I

Get in the face;

My heart beats

All over the place.

“Brains!” he says.

“Brains” he groans.

“Brains,” he grunts.

And “Brains” he moans.

And every time

I get an earful;

My eye balls swell

And get real tearful.

It’s something that

I can’t explain;

I guess he loves me

For… my brain!
