On writing twists and unexpected endings

I love writing fantasy but what I never want to do is write what you expect to read. In Illicit Magic, the first of the Stella Mayweather series, I want to keep on surprising you. Love triangle? Look a little closer and maybe it’s not what it seems. An all powerful witch council who wants to save a young witch… or are they a crumbling institution with major problems of their own?

It would be all too easy for me to write a story that you could guess ahead of (but please do try and guess the villain because that’s part of the fun, right?!) but what I want to do is keep on surprising you with twists and turns so just as soon as you feel comfortable, I want to pull the rug out from under your feet and blast you with something you didn’t see coming.

That’s why in my novels you’ll find people with ulterior motives, beings who aren’t what they seem, dark and twisty subplots, red herrings, and just like Stella, you won’t know who exactly her friends are. The good people might not be wholly that and the bad guys might not be everything they initially seem either and as for their motives… there will be some surprises there too.

Interwoven with all that is the magic that is an intrinsic part of their world. My witches aren’t uniform beings. Instead they have different powers and abilities, as well as different desires. It’s my plan to ensure Stella never knows what she’s coming up against as the series progresses!

So as our heroine Stella discovers what’s going on in her world, I hope you’ll be surprised too.

I live in London, England, but I try to travel as often as I can – I’ve been all over the US and Europe. In my day job I'm a journalist and editor so I write for magazines, newspapers and websites throughout the world (my favourite assignment was spending a week riding rollercoasters - if you listen carefully you can probably still hear me screaming) but writing fiction has always been my first love.
